What a wonderful idea for a work of art, beautiful, ephemeral, amazing! Thanks for sharing this! I believe wonder is necessary for the expansion of mind and soul. If you never have wonder, it seems you are stuck in a place where nothing new is happening, where you have experienced over and over the same set of circumstances. Wonder comes in the window when you notice something new, something fresh, something out of the ordinary, which can happen anywhere, any time, if you are open to noticing things. The river cane in my back yard is one example, it grows so fast that if you forget to notice it, next time you do, it might have grown several feet and be putting up a whole line of new foot tall shoots. It's so vigorous in its growth, that it inspires that feeling of awe you were talking about, how could something so . . . lovely, white when it first comes up and darkening to green later, how can that make you feel a twinge of unease, as if it might take over if not kept in some kind of check. So vigorous the only way to kill it is salt the ground so nothing grows, or continually cut it back until it gets the idea! Wonder is what you feel when you see a line of fruit trees explode into blossom, even though it happens every year, there is still wonder in that it is happening in that moment!

"Dit is sensationeel."Awesome needs translation. All human experience is a synthesis of existence and possible existence. Joy may be the attempt to describe that expectation of revelation.

Oh, how lovley! A place with such beauty and book! Books in the bath, books on the tables, in shelves, piled up! Now there is a place that I can feel a connection too, and all that wonderful green! Thanks for showing this to all of us!

My family and I just stayed there a few weeks ago ourselves. Looks like you had sunnier days than we did! But it was heavenly. I feel like I could have written this lovely post of yours word for word. Thank you for articulating for me what was so special about our trip!

What wonderful pictures, what beautiful light, what joy you must be having. I felt that I had been gifted with a little trip as I looked long at the post and then clicked through to Designtripper and visited and visited and visited. Thank you.

Thanks, Johnny. And so sorry – that was a local reference! Northeasterners know the ramps I'm referring to are the garlic-related spring vegetable, of which it has been written: "Nothing piques the passion of the seasonally obsessed chef like ramps, whose springtime arrival at the Greenmarket is met with the kind of fervor associated with the naming of a new pope." They are good. Ramp risotto recipe here.

Wonderful piece, Ingrid! I love your descriptions of the landscapes, and the unexpected shift toward the end to the literal and metaphorical seduction of spring.

I have one question. What do you mean by "It’s why we freak out about ramps"? Am I missing the reference or is this a typo? I have no idea what this means in the context of the surrounding sentences.

Thanks as always.

Hey hey! This was filmed on my street, I lived on these steps. You should have seen the huge net they had strung across the the street at the bottom to catch all the balls. It was totally cool. The funny thing was, they had done it on Lombard St. a few days before, and discovered that the white balls. which were apparently a little heavier than the others, were breaking windows. So somebody had to comb through 100,000 superballs and pull out the white ones before they could do it again.

I've found my refuge from coolness within the remarkably inclusive, diverse, and passionate world of a soccer supporter's group. Nowhere do I feel more free to joyfully sing loudly (and badly), and to embrace and dance with strangers--who fast become friends--than in Section 121 with the Angel City Brigade. Go Los Angeles Galaxy! And go Planet Football!!

I LOVE this post! It immediately brings me back to high school and how the "cool" people always acted a certain way and, while wishing I was one of them on the one hand, being grateful that I could "just be me" on the other.

I take pleasure in being me, no matter how uncool I be.

Thanks for sharing and reaffirming how being joyous is a gift we can all embrace.

My knee-jerk response is Karaoke. But I always rock at karaoke, so joy and cool collide for me in that particular sport.

All kidding aside - this is a beautiful post and I can totally feel the tension in myself between "cool" and joy. The way I act at home with just Aaron and I, in hoodies playing MarioKart, is so much more life-giving than how reserved I try to be "outside" the house. Gonna start making some small changes.

How interesting to think of "cool" as being the enemy of "joy". I have never been considered one of the "cool" people, which I have learned to accept and understand. Now I can see that tendency of "cool" inhibiting the natural "joy" and "playful" processes. I am happy to be "uncool".

Something triggered when you said "celebrations and festivals......"
I can understand this - when one participates in a festival, one enters an energy zone of abundance...abundance hits all one;s senses....and one cancome away having spent little money but having experienced abundant energy.

having said that - and I;m a person whos anti excess consumption....my work requires me to innovate ways that encourage consumption (i work in retail)

so, we design beautiful stores that entice people (similar to a festival/ carnival) then people walk around, absord the sensory assaults...and leave , with a small purchase :-) the do not buy the entire store...

just a paradox of behaviour ...and thats what makes life worthwhile !

wonderfully thought-provoking post, as usual! I never would have thought fractals and birdsongs were related. huh. and I love the idea that we have a joyful response to birds singing because of something deep within our collective unconscious. beautiful.
