This has been one of those weeks that goes slow slow slow at the start and then speeds up and boom! It’s Friday. Time is funny that way. It stretches and contracts, usually based on how we feel about it. I wrote in a post a few years ago about chronos (measured time) and kairos (felt time) and the discrepancy between the two. Anyway, it’s like I accidentally stepped into a teleporter and all of a sudden it’s Friday but I’m not quite sure how we got here!
I mentioned in my last post that I’m trying out writing on a schedule now: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday you can expect to see new stuff here. I’m also trying out some new things, and am thinking a lot about how to use this space, and what you might like to read here. So let me know! If you love something or hate it, want more or less of something, or just have a request for something you’d like to see here, please let me know in the comments!
And now, on to the Friday finds:
- Facebook launched reactions this week. Wahoo! It’s a relief to no longer have that awkward moment where you debate whether to “like” a post about a friend’s bad day. Wired has a fascinating read on how Facebook incorporated research on emotions into the process of developing reactions. Now that they’ve launched, it seems like this could be a powerful platform to better understand emotions in social life.
- Our brains treat LEGO people as if they’re alive, according to a whimsical study out this week.
- I am not sure if this giant pink cake maze makes me feel joyful or a little frightened. (Or just hungry!) But if you are in LA you should go check it out.
- Loving this hashtag #FaceTheFoliage, where people make faces out of flowers and post them. Faces + flowers, two joyful things coming together in a silly, sweet way.
- Not sure what I will do with this yet, but I just discovered John James Audubon’s Birds of America are online and available for high-res download. Might need a print of the incredible Columbian Hummingbird, pictured above, for the house.
- Why a “happy walk” actually makes you feel that way, and other wisdom from the amazing Amy Cuddy.
Hope you have a joyful weekend!
